Twenty-somethings hope to bring youthful vigour to Fareham's council

Tom Davies is 23 years old and is hoping for election for the Conservatives in Fareham East.

He said: ‘It is good to see some young faces here tonight from all the parties. It is good to see young people being interested and getting engaged with politics.’

The Labour party put forward 15 candidates, including 24-year-old Andrew Ovenden in Fareham North West and 25-year-old Mark Harrison in Warsash.

Mr Ovenden said: ‘Young people need to realise just how important local politics are.’

Mr Harrison, who is a trainee officer at Warsash Maritime Academy, said: ‘The Conservative Party policy is not only unfair, it is economic madness. It is not the rich who are paying it is the working class.’

The Green party stood candidates in five wards, with 21-year-old Miles Grindey standing in Warsash.

Although David Harrison, who is the Green’s candidate in Fareham North, said that the party was focusing their attention elsewhere.

He said: ‘We are pleased to have five candidates in Fareham and four in Gosport. It has been largely a paper candidacy in Fareham as we have targeted our efforts into Southsea where the Green candidate Ian McCulloch has a real chance of getting elected.’
