The government is considering bringing forward the new law from 2040 to 2035 in a drive to cut pollution.

Transport for the South East (TSE), which unites the region’s local authorities, business groups and other key organisations, has now called for the creation of a task force to ensure the targets scheme doesn’t descend into chaos.

The body has demanded the government units with the motor industry to form the action group, which will oversea the delivery and implementation of the vehicle ban.

It has also tabled a series of proposed measures to make the change a success.

These include financial incentives to encourage people and businesses to switch to electric vehicles, research grants to help the motor industry shift to creating zero-emission vehicles, and improved charging facilities.

Councillor Keith Glazier, TSE chairman, said: ‘Ending the sale of petrol, diesel and hybrid cars and vans will be a critical point on the UK’s journey to a zero emissions future, but agreeing a date is not enough.

‘Whether the target is 2040, 2035 or sooner, it must be accompanied by a clear and costed action plan setting out how we are going to reach this critical milestone. Without it, there is a significant risk that the target could be missed.’

TSE represents 300,000 businesses and 7.5m people.
