Lloyd Adams, who turned 100 in January, fought on the ship in 1940 and was happy to see the bell revealed by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne.

The bell forms part of a new exhibition at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard after it was recovered in the Denmark Strait and donated to the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

Mr Adams, from Netley, said: ‘Seeing the bell is very important.

‘It carries the name of the ship and is important for its identity. The bell is the soul of a ship.’

Princess Anne unveiled the bell during a service outside HMS Victory yesterday.

It was attended by veterans from the HMS Hood Association and their families as well as the Royal Marines Band and the Guard of Honour.

Alec Kallaway and Keith Evans both served on HMS Hood in about 1938.

They presented the princess with a picture.

Mr Adams’ son Simon said it was great for the veterans to get together.
