The event, held at Guildhall Square, was organised by Simon Magorian from Stand up to Racism.

It comes after 11 people, including a 97-year-old woman, were gunned down inside the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill on Saturday.

Portsmouth South Labour MP Stephen Morgan sent a statement to be read out.

It said: '˜I was horrified by the senseless act of violence and racism committed in Pittsburgh this weekend.

'˜It showed us, in the most heartbreaking and graphic way, that anti-semitism and racism remains an all too powerful poison in our society.

'˜Tonight we show solidarity to the victims and their families of this heartless act.'
