Woman from Gosport told to move mobility scooter from outside home

Instead, the council has offered her a garage a mile away to store them in.

Jeanette Perry, from Gosport, was moved into a one-bedroom council house suitable for her disability earlier this year.

But since moving, the 58-year-old has been told by Gosport Borough Council staff that she is not allowed to keep her mobility scooters outside her home and if she will not use the garage, she has to get rid of them.

After complaining, Ms Perry was assured by council chief executive Ian Lycett that she can keep them outside her house. But she is still being told by other staff members she cannot.

‘I am so confused and it is adding more stress to my life,’ she said.

‘First of all they said I can’t have them outside my house, then Mr Lycett sent a letter which said I could but I am still being told I am not allowed.

‘I haven’t been able to settle in my new house for weeks because I am worried the council will force me into a different property.

‘The whole situation has made me really upset. This is the third time I have moved in 18 months and I finally thought this house was going to become my home.’

Ms Perry was moved into the new property in St Luke’s Road after her former two-bedroom house was too big.

She says when she was shown the new house, no-one mentioned about her mobility scooters. She added: ‘I had no idea it was going to be such a problem.

‘The council have offered me a garage but it is a mile away. I won’t be able to get there and back and unless it has an automatic door, I won’t be able to open it either.

‘I cannot get out and about without my mobility scooter.’

Ms Perry was also told a storage box of litter-pick equipment, which she uses to regularly clean up the Gosport area, also had to go.

‘I volunteer my time to pick up litter so Gosport looks nice but the council doesn’t seem to appreciate it,’ she said.

In a letter sent to Ms Perry, seen by The News, Mr Lycett said residents are not allowed to block communal areas but added the area outside her property is within its boundary and not considered communal land.

Ms Perry said: ‘It has made me confused and I fear I might lose my house if I keep them there.’

The council did not provide a comment when contacted by The News.
