THE government has told a local authority it must reduce its number of councillors and redraw ward boundaries.

Residents who come under Winchester City Council, which covers areas such as Hambledon, Denmead, Wickham and Whiteley, are being consulted on how the boundaries should change.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England says the council should cut the number of councillors it has from 57 to 45.

Max Caller, chairman of the commission, said: ‘If you have a view about which communities or neighbourhoods should be part of the same council ward, then we want to hear from you. And if you think a road, river or railway makes for a strong boundary between communities in your part of Winchester, this consultation is for you.’
