Your views wanted on disability awareness in Portsmouth

The first years at the University of Portsmouth, pictured, are embarking on a project called Promoting the Dignity and Worth of People – and they need the public’s help.

Student Shelby Teale said: ‘Recently some of us have seen posts on social media about disabled people who do not necessarily look disabled, getting abuse for using a disabled badge or using a disabled toilet.

‘We are trying to promote understanding that not all disabilities are visible.

‘We’re trying to change the views of local people and students across Portsmouth.’

They have put together a petition to change the wheelchair sign which symbolises disability to something more neutral and inclusive of all disabilities.

Shelby and her course mates would like people to come forward with their views and their experiences of what it is like to be disabled with a condition that cannot be seen straight away.

To encourage participation the students have designed stickers to give away.

As part of the project they are raising money for the charity Enable Ability, which is in Copnor.

The charity offers friendship, support and advice to disabled people in the city.
