Zumba, coffee and advice at MP's older people's fair

AN MP is urging older people in the town to attend her event for senior citizens, in a bid to help tackle loneliness and isolation.

MP Suella Fernandes, who represents Fareham, is to host a senior citizens’ fair, sponsored by the Rotary Club, on Friday, November 25.

The fair will showcase a wide range of local and national groups and organisations covering pastimes and hobbies, and health and lifestyle support groups – which will have stalls set up and representatives to talk to visitors.

Those who attend the fair will also have the opportunity to have coffee and cake with Ms Fernandes.

Fitness instructor Pauline Grant will give a demonstration of her zumba exercise class aimed at mature participants and there will be live music from the 1950s, performed by Ian Ash.

Ms Fernandes said: ‘All too often we hear about the problems that can accompany the ageing process, including loneliness and isolation, and in my opinion all too little is being done to tackle these issues.

‘I have therefore decided to host a fair to bring together the huge variety of interests and activity groups we have in our community, enabling people to browse these at leisure and chat with representatives of different organisations.

‘Age should not be a barrier to social participation and I am hoping that the event will be the first of many more to come.’

It will take place at St John The Evangelist Church Hall, Upper Saint Michael’s Grove, from 3pm to 5.30pm.

A variety of organisations will be represented, including health and fitness, hobbies, voluntary services, home support, financial and bereavement services.

Demonstrations will be held on stage as well as a coffee and cake session with Ms Fernandes so residents of all ages can have a chat to their MP.
