Pompey fans honour crash victim Gary Martin at away match
POMPEY fans rose to their feet and applauded in the 53rd minute of today's match in honour of a road crash victim.
Gary Martin, of Gosport, would have turned 53 today but tragically died in a crash with a truck in Eastern Road on Wednesday.
It happened on Eastern Road in Portsmouth at its junction with Kirpal Road at 6.28am.
Moped rider Mr Martin was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham but died of his injuries.
Cambridge and Portsmouth fans applauded to mark Mr Martin's death.
His niece Michelle Ralph yesterday called for Pompey fans to honour the Pompey-mad 52-year-old's death at the away game at Cambridge United today.
She said: 'To the Pompey fans travelling to Cambridge for the away match on Saturday.
‘My uncle, Gary Martin, tragically passed away on Wednesday in an accident in Eastern Road.
‘He would have turned 53 on Saturday and had tickets for the away game.
‘It would be a fitting tribute for a lifelong Pompey supporter and a season ticket holder for more than 30 years, if the fans could do a minute’s applause in memory of an amazing man.’
His family have left floral tributes at the scene of the fatal crash.
