Sean Mitchell, 46, and Simon Hore, 33, were among two of the yobs being hunted by police who decided to hand themselves in after appearing in CCTV images released by the authorities to The News.

They were part of a baying mob who are appearing in Portsmouth Crown Court this week for sentencing over the violent disorder that took place around Guildhall Square in the hours building up to the League Two clash with Plymouth '” dubbed the '˜dockyard derby' '” in April last year.

Hore, who had no previous convictions for football-related disorder, was among those '˜intent on violence' with him seen on CCTV launching an object towards Plymouth fans. In defence, Philip Allman said Hore, of Medina Road, Cosham, was '˜ashamed of his behaviour' and came forward after seeing his picture in The News.

Mitchell, who has previous for violent disorder and had a five-year football banning order that expired in 2016, was also caught up in the melee after throwing a can of drink at opposing fans in the ugly scenes.

In defence, Gemma White, said Mitchell, of Chaucer Drive, Chichester, had safety concerns after being on the train with Plymouth fans before joining up with fellow Pompey mates. '˜He handed himself in (after the appeal picture in The News),' she said.

'˜The media coverage had a substantial impact on him with him losing his job,' Ms White said before adding that his new employer had described him as a '˜trusted member of the company'.

Other violent confrontations resulted in a lame duck Plymouth fan being booted while on the floor in Winston Churchill Avenue by a number of Portsmouth supporters as they ran amok throughout the city centre.

Harley Hawkins, 19, of Whitecliffe Avenue, Copnor, was one of the men to kick the rival fan who was on the floor - with him describing his actions as '˜stupid'.

Louis Glasspool, 20, of Tudor Crescent, Cosham, was part of the mob of fans baying at police - with him pushing out at officers. The defendant admitted it was '˜embarrassing to watch on CCTV'.

Harry Jarvie, 21, of Manor Road, Buckland, admitted throwing a coin over the police cordon in the melee.
