A Southern Water spokesman said: '˜During a routine inspection of the A2030 Eastern Road bridge, Portsmouth City Council Highways workers spotted a drip from one of the sewer pipes under the bridge

'˜We immediately investigated and confirmed a small hole in the pipe.

'˜The harbour authorities and regulators were informed straightaway.

'˜Our Beachbuoy real time alert for recreational water users was also triggered.

'Although the drip is very small, we are treating this as a high priority.

'˜A specialist team will make repairs from a barge. As we are tackling the job from underneath, we will not need to place any traffic restrictions on the bridge.

'˜We are currently liaising with harbour authorities to ensure our work can be done safely and with minimal disruption to commercial and recreational water traffic.

'˜We would like to thank Portsmouth's Highways team for alerting us to this.'Â
