FIRE has closed a French-style cafe in Portsmouth’s leading shopping centre.

More than 30 firefighters attended the blaze at Cafe Rouge in Gunwharf Quays early today.

Southsea fire station crew manager Karl Manners said five fire engines were sent to the fire which broke out in a bin store behind the cafe alongside the Quays’s canal.

He said the fire, which started shortly after 3am had destroyed the restaurant’s electricity supply. Firefighters did not leave until 5.30am.

Four of them wearing breathing apparatus had to break into a room at the back of the cafe to reach the fire.

Mr Manners said: ‘The cafe will not be opening today because the fire knocked out the electrics.

‘We don’t think there was anything suspicious about it, but we will be sending investigators to have a look later today.’

He added that five appliances were always sent to any fire at Gunwharf.
