Portsmouth City Council steps in over dial-a-ride service

THE council has said it will provide a '˜cost-effective' dial-a-ride as the service is axed.

Portsmouth City Council withdrew funding for the transport service for the disabled and elderly and it was taken over by Pompey Dial Ride in 2015.

But now after the not-for-profit firm said it could not continue, the council revealed it will step in from September.

Councillor Jim Fleming, cabinet member for transport and transportation, said the council had given more than £60,000 in the past year, as well as officer time to help write a case for funding.

He added: ‘However, we are not in a position to continue to support a private organisation which doesn’t have a viable business offering

‘The alternative options we’re looking at would provide the same service for users in a much more cost-effective way.’
