Portsmouth councillor named as new Heritage Champion

A PORTSMOUTH city councillor has been given a new role to promote the city's historic environment.

Councillor Stephen Morgan, who represents the Charles Dickens ward, will be the city’s first Heritage Champion.

The role will include building enthusiasm and awareness of the Portsmouth’s heritage, promoting economic growth and ensuring the city’s landscape is properly cared for.

Cllr Morgan, the council’s deputy Labour leader, said he was “honoured” to be given the position,

He added: “It would be an important role anywhere but for a city with historic links as strong as ours it is vital.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to work with others to see these unlocked to increase accessibility and their benefit for all local people.”

Decisions about the city’s heritage assets will continue to be made by the council’s relevant cabinet member and planning committee.

As one of his first jobs Cllr Morgan will tour the city’s historic landmarks this weekend as part of the national Heritage Open Days initiative.

He said: “There are so many different elements to look at in the champion role and influences from throughout the years and I’m looking forward to learning more and helping safeguard them for the future.
