A CONCERT at the Guildhall in Portsmouth has been stopped after a man fell from the balcony.

American punk band A Day to Remember halted their concert at the Guildhall just after 10pm tonight after a man plunged from the balcony.

Fans at the gig said the group, who had been on stage for about 30 minutes, instantly stopped playing and then it was announced that the concert was over.

The audience was ushered out of the building into Guildhall Square.

Eyewitnesses said they were shocked by what they saw. They said he looked like a young man, in his late teens or early 20s

One gig-goer, a 23-year-old from Fareham, said: ‘St John Ambulance went over straight away. I went over and asked if they needed a hand. I was clearing people back from the area for a bit. The police and the ambulance were there within two or three minutes, very quickly. It looked like they were trying to get a line into him, trying to clear his airways.

‘It’s a tragedy, what happened.’

Kristina Maggiora, 21, from Bournemouth, said: ‘They put some black barriers around him so he could be treated. I can’t imagine how his friends and family might feel.’

A spokeswoman for Hampshire police said that the man had been taken to Southampton General Hospital with serious head injuries. She said that at 11.30pm police were still in the Guildhall.

‘They are taking statements from a group of people and are working to establish what happened,’ she said.
