DESPITE suffering a broken toe, a Portsmouth grandmother swam a mile to raise money for charity.

Christine Edward, 69, has Type 2 diabetes and is the chairwoman of the City of Portsmouth Diabetes UK Voluntary Group.

She took part in the Great London Swim and completed the course, equivalent to 63 lengths of a 25m pool, in 52 minutes and 35 seconds.

Nicola Musk, Diabetes UK south east regional fundraising manager said: ‘We thank and appreciate the fantastic fundraising achievements of Chris for this challenging feat in aid of our charity.

‘Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today.’
