Portsmouth movie about a Falklands veteran with PTSD needs city's help
A CROWDFUNDING bid has been launched to pay for a film which looks to shine a light on the problems faced by traumatised war heroes.
Producers behind Falkland Square hope to drum up £55,000 to fund the movie '“ which will be filmed in Portsmouth.
They have already raised almost £7,000 towards the costs but are now looking for donors to help pay for the rest.
The fictional film follows the life of Dave Simms, a Falklands War veteran and survivor of the Battle for Goose Green, who is now living rough on the streets of Portsmouth.
Suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, Dave's life and identity are at a loss until a chance encounter with a gravely-ill dog changes his life forever.
Myles Petford is the film's director. At 23-year-old, it's his first feature-length movie, having previously directed a number of short films, with his last Cole, having scooped a range of awards at European festivals.
Myles said this project was particularly close with him and hoped the people of Portsmouth would show their support.
He said: '˜The lead character is loosely based on the father of the Russ Meyers; who is co-producer of the film.
'˜Russ reached out to me with interest that I would direct the story about his father.Â
'˜The story connected with me and I feel it should be told to the masses, it really is a story of hope.'
He added: '˜My close friend has done two tours of Iraq and is currently in his third. I have witnessed PTSD first hand and I still feel it isn't that widely recognised with people. My goal is to get the awareness out there whilst telling a heart-wrenching story.
'˜Please help us match our current budget and tell this true English story.'
The film already has the backing of UK-based production company, Great British Entertainment and Lexicon Films.
There are nine days left on the crowdfunding campaign before the deadline runs out.
