Portsmouth pubs that quenched the thirst of the Royal Navy

Two old pubs of Portsea today which will bring back memories for many of you.

THEN The Royal Naval Arms, a superb half-timbered building that stood on the corner of Queen Street and York Place, Portsea, Portsmouth

In both instances there is nothing left today to remind us of their existence.

There were dozens of pubs and beerhouses in Queen Street catering for the thirst of men from the Royal Navy and the thousands who worked in the adjacent dockyard.

Above is the old Royal Naval Arms which stood right next to the naval barracks on one side with another pub, The Royal Standard, on the other. A couple of doors down from the Standard was yet another pub, The White Bear.

NOW Did the Royal Naval Arms really once stand here?

Then there is The Three Crowns Inn in St James’s Street, Portsea.

Running from Queen Street to Kent Street, this road in earlier times was known as Pushole, and it was also the home of Dagostino’s Ice Cream.
