UNEMPLOYMENT in Portsmouth and surrounding areas has reduced by just over 40 per cent in five years, according to the city’s Jobcentre Plus.

This reflects figures released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which reveals unemployment has not been lower since 1975 with it standing at four per cent.

Youth unemployment has also gone down over the same period after seeing a 54  per cent reduction. This also mirrors the national trend with the ONS stating this has now halved since 2010.

Rachel Spilman, work coach team leader at Portsmouth Jobcentre Plus said: ‘I’m delighted to see that the unemployment rate for Portsmouth and the surrounding areas has reduced by just over 40 per cent in the last five years.

‘I’m also particularly encouraged to see the large reduction in youth unemployment which is down 54 per cent in Portsmouth over the last five years.

‘We have been working closely with local employers at the Cascades and the Gunwharf jobsfair. We  will continue to support our customers to help them find the right opportunity.’
