Portsmouth's Lord Mayor potted black in 24-hour charity poolathon

Councillor David Fuller stopped by The Royal pub in Commercial Road last night to record his first win in five years as part of the establishment’s marathon contest.

Cllr Fuller’s win was the first of what is expected to be more than 100 games played at the pub from 6pm yesterday to 6pm today.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust, a support charity that assists current and former navy personnel.

Cllr Fuller said: ‘This is a lovely charity that works wonders for the people it supports.

‘I have heard some incredible stories today about the work that they do, so they have my backing and I was very pleased to open the poolathon with my first win in five years!’

John Crichton, a chef in HMS Dauntless, organised the event with Steve Welch, the pub’s landlord.

Mr Crichton, 33, from Hilsea, said: ‘The charity has been really excited about the event, so I hope it will be a big success. Steve and I will be up all night as we’ll be battling to the end.

‘I just hope I manage to stay awake!’
