Preparations now underway for winter

Have your say

Honor Plowright, ladies’ captain of the Cowplain Bowling Club, talks about the latest developments at

the club

The summer outdoor bowling season has finally come to an end.

At Cowplain Bowls Club and our hardworking Green Maintenance Team is preparing our world class surface for the rigours of the winter.

Our members are searching the shops and websites for suitable cold weather clothing and hand warmers.

We have had a very successful first summer season.

We didn’t know what to expect of our new playing surface but we had high hopes.

We have enrolled many enthusiastic new bowlers, some of whom will be presented with winners and runners up trophies at our annual presentation dinner.

Cowplain bowlers have been winners and runners up in local competitions, finished top of two leagues and will be bringing home many trophies from the Portsmouth and District Bowls Association presentation dinner.

We were also finalists in several Hampshire County competitions resulting in yet more trophies.

Our hopes have been fulfilled.

But there is one more accolade still to be won this year. When the process was begun to replace our old grass green it was Clive Lambshead, a long established member, who prepared the bid.

As this season drew to a close it was Clive who suggested the club enter the Bowls England Club of the Year competition.

Little did we know that it would result in being chosen as the regional winner for the south, joining three other finalists.

This means that we have the chance to become the Bowls England National Club of the Year, which would be the wonderful acknowledgement of our aim to create a club for all – young and old, able-bodied and disabled, social and competitive.

We have made new friends and said our goodbyes to a few old friends.

Some, but not all, are looking forward to playing during the winter and have entered the winter competitions.

Many of us will wonder if we are mad playing in the cold and wet but will enjoy the gloriously sunny wintry days.

Ted and Diane’s monthly quiz nights will entertain and educate us through the winter months and all of us will continue to enjoy the camaraderie we have experienced throughout our first summer of bowling on our new artificial surface.
