PRISONERS were evacuated from their cells after a fire broke out.

Part of HMP Isle of Wight were evacuated after a blaze took over a corridor.

Crews were called to the category B prison in Newport shortly before 7.30pm last night to reports of a fire in one of the house blocks.

Firefighters were called to the prison’s Albany site and the blaze was put out by 9pm.

The Ministry of Justice said an investigation was under way.

A spokesman for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had begun in House Unit 15 of Alpha Wing of the prison.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: ‘There was a small fire on one of the house blocks at HMP Albany.

‘The fire is now out, and the fire service was called as a precaution. The matter is being investigated.’
