Organisations in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas have signed up for the fundraising day, organised by the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.

Next Friday, May 5, hundreds of people from across the city will be dressing in blue and holding blue-themed activities.

Supported by The News and Pompey, Blue Day was started in 2008 in memory of teenager Tom Prince.

Purbrook Infant School has been supporting the day for a number of years.

Hazel Dean, from the school on Aldermoor Road East, said: ‘We ask the children to dress in blue or wear their Pompey shirts.

‘The parents are really supportive of Blue Day and everyone makes an effort to join in.

‘As well as the dressing up, we always have an assembly to explain about Blue Day and why we are raising money.

‘The children learn about the importance of supporting the trust. It was started for a child and it’s a cause close to the city’s heart.’

The Tom Prince Cancer Trust was started in 2004 by Tom’s parents Clinton and Adele, from Southsea.

The 15-year-old died on the eve of his 16th birthday from rare bone cancer osteosarcoma.

He was a massive Pompey fan and when the club reached the FA Cup semi-final in 2008 at Wembley Stadium, the trust organised the first-ever Blue Day.

Since then, organisations have supported the event, traditionally held on the Friday before Pompey’s final home game of the season.

Last year, the trust reached the £1m target that was set when it first started fundraising.
