THE biggest event in any salon’s calendar is back! The News’ annual Hair and Beauty Awards is being launched today.

This year readers are being asked to nominate their favourite salon in the Readers’ Choice category.

Other salons will also have a chance to shine as they are judged by top names in the hair and beauty industry in 13 different categories.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held at the Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday, July 5.

Last year, United Salons, in Southsea, was named Salon of the Year and this year owner Tony Wood is looking forward to the event’s return.

The salon has undergone a rebrand in October and is now named Tony Wood Hair.

Tony said: ‘I’m looking forward to this year’s awards more than ever. I’ve been onboard with the awards from when they started, four years ago. From small beginnings, these awards have grown into a nationally-recognised success story.

‘In the past few years, I and my team, friends and acquaintances have won awards and it feels incredible.

‘The buzz that’s created in the salon in the build-up is one thing, but taking the award back to the salon means the world.

‘Sharing it with your team-mates and clients is so exciting.

‘It’s like the ultimate reward for all the hard work you’ve done.’

Because of the salon’s support over the years, Tony Wood Hair also has been named as ‘in association with’ for this year’s awards.

Mr Wood added: ‘I’ve been hairdressing for 30 years and next year I’ve been trading for 25.

‘For The News to ask me to take this role is an honour.’

Events co-ordinator Liz Parker said: ‘At The News we feel that recognising people in such a successful industry is important.

‘ There are so many talented people out there and we want to recognise, reward and celebrate their achievements of excellence.

‘Building on the huge success of last year’s awards, we are aiming for another exciting, glitzy and glamorous evening for 2014.

‘I look forward to seeing you all there.’

This year 13 of the categories will be judged by a panel including professionals.

The Readers’ Choice category, however, will be open for the public to choose which they think is the salon of the year. Nomination forms for this will be printed in The News on Tuesday, April 22 and will run every Tuesday until June 24 when entries will close for that category.

The closing date to enter the 13 other categories is May 9.
