A DISTRAUGHT mother left a suicide note describing how she wanted to join her four-year-old daughter who she said had accidentally drowned the previous day, an inquest heard.

Cathy Madden, 40, was discovered dead at the foot of cliffs near Eastbourne on July 3 last year.

On the same day, the body of her daughter, Keira Madden, was discovered at the family home in Roundle Avenue, Bognor.

Mrs Madden’s suicide note claimed Keira had drowned at the beach in a ‘horrible accident’.

The note, read out yesterday at the inquest in Chichester, said: ‘I wanted to bring her home and put her to bed where she was peaceful. I wanted to pass away with her, but I couldn’t find the means so I left for Beachy Head so I could be with her quickly.’

Coroner Penelope Schofield recorded an open verdict into Keira’s death as it could not be proven that she had definitely drowned or it was an accident. She added she was not satisfied ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ Keira was unlawfully killed.
