Rare Kenny Everett footage from Portsmouth radio station sells for over £700 at auction

The recently unearthed programmes feature Everett working on early commercial station Radio Victory in 1976.

The five original master tapes, which were believed to be lost, include his trademark humour, sketches and jingles. They also feature performances from the outlandish comic’s self-penned radio series Captain Kremmen.

The archive programmes were discovered by former presenter Andy Ferris from some tapes he bought from the station after it shut down in 1986.

Ferris told the BBC the tapes prove how Everett was ‘relentless in his pursuit of entertainment’.

He said: ‘At the time Everett was a household name with a very popular television show. He sent us a tape every week of one of his put-together programmes - it was great.

‘It was Kenny being funny and taking the mick and playing the music he liked at the time - he’d be very amusing and dropping in lots of sound effects.’

Everett, who died in 1995, was known to record the shows at his home in Cowfield, Sussex and would use multi-track recorders to create innovative effects.

Earlier today, the tapes were auctioned off at Dominic Winter Auctioneers in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. A private individual from Gloucestershire bought the lot for £720.

A BBC documentary about Everett’s life is due to be broadcast and will feature these Victory tapes, along with recordings of earlier BBC Radio Solent programmes.

Radio Victory, was a Portsmouth-based station that ran from 1975 to 1985.

Kenny Everett, was a British comedian, radio DJ and television entertainer. He is best known for his career as a radio DJ and for The Kenny Everett Video Show.
