Recreating Bible stories with bricks

A GRANDMOTHER and a child use yellow bricks to build ears of corn.

Nearby, two siblings create a tractor and trailer together using lots of different coloured bricks.

This is Build@Church, a fun space for people of all ages to play and pray with Lego and Duplo bricks.

We meet on the second Saturday of each month at the Church of the Resurrection, at Drayton, between 2pm and 4pm.

Each session is based on a story from the Bible, and last Saturday it was the story of Ruth and what happened to her and her family one harvest time, thousands of years ago in Bethlehem.

The vicar, the Rev Paul Gully, acted out the story – even taking off his shoes and socks to show us the way in which Ruth met her future husband Boaz.

It was then up to us to build whatever we wanted in response to that story, using the bricks.

And we built all kinds of things.

Some people chose to recreate the whole story with Boaz’s house and the harvest field, complete with ears of corn, wheat and barley growing.

Others chose to build tractors and trailers to collect and transport the harvest.

We even had a train to carry the goods – bringing the story right up to date.

We used an app to show each other what we had made on the big screen in church.

Then we used bricks to pray, saying thank you for what makes us happy and asking for help with what makes us sad.

We built a tower with our bricks to collect all we had prayed for. After that we shared tea and cake together.

Over the past few months we have been collecting tins and packets of food for a food bank in Portsmouth.

We are going to be visiting in October half-term to find out about how the things we have collected will help those who don’t have anything to eat.
