Remember this shop?

When he retired he opened a photographic shop in the city at 90, Copnor Road. It has since been converted into a house.

I asked Paul Costen, our local photographic expert, what cameras are on show in the shop window. He tells me there are Kodaks, Brownies and a Twin Lens Reflex.

Back in 2010 another of Diana’s photographs showed drivers from the United Breweries. One of them was Bert ‘Smiffy’ Smith, who was Diana’s step-grandfather.

The second photograph here is of a brewery family day in the 1950s which, Diana tells me, were always great fun. Bert is dressed as a clown in the centre.

Bert was apparently a sickly, delicate child and suffered lung problems all his life. His parents didn’t know what job would suit him so they bought him the first licensed motor hackney taxi in Portsmouth. He later became a driver for the brewery.

Diana was told that Bert’s father was an architect in Portsmouth and was allowed to name streets in the Fratton area after his children.

Diana’s brother told her that Cuthbert Road was named after him. However, it may have been Bertie Road.

I wonder if anyone on the council knows how streets were named?
