Rotarian's project to help teaches is a success
A trip to help teachers in the Philippines has been deemed a success.
The Rotary Club of Portsmouth and Southsea raised £50,300 to send three teachers to Manila where they carried out teacher training.
Member Dennis Meadus helped organise the fundraising of the money and helped negotiate for the club to receive a number of grants.
The money was raised with the help of 18 other Rotary clubs in Hampshire, as well as another 15 from a wider area.
Acting as the primary international contact, Dennis also organised sending the teachers to the school.
He got in touch with different Rotary clubs telling them about the project, as well as making the necessary arrangements for the visit.
He says: ‘This project was a big one for Rotary and we hope that sending the teachers to Tondo Senior School to do training will help in the future.
‘It took a lot of hard work from everyone involved to get Caroline Gwatkin and Joanna Glos to Manila.
‘All the Rotaries who donated helped make it happen.
‘To raise the $70,000 was quite an achievement and the grant that we were given is quite difficult to get.’
A presentation was held at the club’s meeting showing the work the teachers carried out and that good progress was being made. It is hoped a follow-up visit will happen next year.
