Royal Navy has saved thousands of migrants from drowning

ROYAL Navy teams have helped to rescue more than 12,500 people in the Mediterranean, an MP from Portsmouth has said.

Armed Forces minister Penny Mordaunt revealed the figure to MPs this week.

It came following a question from SNP MP Stuart McDonald over whether or not UK military assets were being tasked to rescue migrants attempting to enter into Europe.

The Portsmouth North MP responded, saying the Royal Navy was not involved in search and rescue missions but that HMS Enterprise was supporting the EU-led naval operation in the sea.
