A CITY rugby club is celebrating after gaining 25 new players during a recruitment day.
United Services Portsmouth RFC held the event at Governors Green and Clarence Fields, Portsmouth, on Sunday in a bid to encourage both young and old, male and female, to join one of their many teams.
The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Frank Jonas, was also at the event to show his support and see the facilities at the club.
Simon Burns, director of rugby at United Services Portsmouth RFC, said: ‘We didn’t expect to get that many new members, but we are really happy we did.
‘Because of the Olympics, the event was selected to be in one of Portsmouth City Council’s magazines, so that gave us a lot more publicity than we were expecting.
‘I think the Olympics has inspired people to get involved with more sport and hopefully we can continue that.’
There are male, female and corps teams at United Services Portsmouth RFC, and teams range in ages from under sevens, to over 35. For more information see pitchero.com/clubs/unitedservicesportsmouth/
