PATROLS are being stepped up in Chichester Harbour.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy, which manages the harbour, has ramped up its training programme and is focusing on providing more patrols at busy times on the water.

This year the team will be scheduled specifically with the events calendar from Chichester Harbour Federation in mind.

Among the duties of the patrol team are first aid, towing, enforcing byelaws and recovering vessels.

Ali Beckett, information officer for the harbour, said: ‘We plan to have additional boats on the water at certain times and so you should never be very far away from a harbour patrol RIB.

‘After a highly successful pilot project last season, we will also be providing more support at Emsworth and you will be able meet our teams there particularly on Saturday morning.

‘Our patrol theme this year will be all about remembering safety.

‘Our patrol teams will be searching out “Safety Champions” and helping to jog memories when necessary. If you have any questions they will be pleased to help.’

She added: ‘Although Chichester Harbour is renowned for its safety, we always try to improve our service – this year’s developments are all in response to feedback from harbour users.’
