School signs up for Blue Day as charity is '˜close to our hearts'

FOR Purbrook Infants, supporting Blue Day gives the children the chance to learn about a charity close to home.

The school has signed up for this year’s Blue Day and the pupils will be encouraged to wear Pompey shirts to raise money.

They have been supporting the event for the past few years and are one of many schools and businesses to sign up for Blue Day which is on Friday, May 6.

Deputy headteacher Lara Jelliff said: ‘We like taking part because it is a local charity that is close to our hearts.

‘Because the charity is based in Portsmouth and many of the children are supporters of the club, they can relate to the day more.

‘They can make a personal link to it.’

Lara added: ‘Blue Day is always fun to take part in and the children enjoy it.

‘A lot of them turn up in Pompey shirts but they can wear anything blue.

‘Hopefully we can help the trust reach that £1m target.’

Blue Day raises money for the Tom Prince Cancer Trust, which was founded in memory of 15-year-old Tom who died from a rare form of bone cancer in 2004.

His parents Adele and Clinton set up the trust to raise £1m for research into osteosarcoma, the type of cancer Tom died from.

With the help of Blue Day, which started in 2008 when Pompey reached the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, the family have raised £980,000.

There is still time to sign up for Blue Day which encourages people to dress in blue and hold blue-themed activities.
