During the four-week expedition in 2017, the group of 150 scouts and adult volunteers will go on safari and work with the community to build a medical centre and renovate a primary school.

The scouts, aged 14 to 18, are asking shoppers to collect Active Kids sport vouchers from Sainsbury’s. The group plans to use the vouchers to get activity kits to give to remote African communities.

Since 2007, Active Kids has provided £4.3m worth of equipment and experiences to more than 4,000 scout groups.

Julian Sore, who has volunteered to lead the exhibition, said: ‘Tanzania 2017 will be the adventure of a lifetime for both the young people and adult volunteers. Not only will they have the opportunity to change the lives of local villagers, the experience offers them the chance to learn new skills they can use in other aspects of their life.’

Hampshire Scouts has a surprising expedition record. In 2015 alone, members travelled 39,450 miles to 15 countries and territories – enough to go around the world 76 times. Scouts have even climbed Everest in the past.

James Ketchell, adventurer and scout ambassador, said: ‘Scouting has a positive impact on so many lives around the world. Sharing adventures, making new friends, learning valuable life skills and gaining confidence is something every young person can benefit from.’
