IT HAS taken part in Blue Day ever since it started – and now DIY firm Screwfix has signed up again this year.
It’s one of a growing number of businesses and schools supporting the blue-themed fundraiser in memory of Tom Prince.
Staff at the Portsmouth store will be dressing in blue, selling cakes and washing vans to raise money for the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.
Steve Whiteaway, branch manager at the store at Admirals Park, said: ‘Blue Day is something we look forward to every year.
‘We’ve been doing it since it started and it’s an event we like to support because it’s all about the city.
‘It’s a local cause and the community really get behind it.’
With the club being promoted and the Tom Prince Cancer Trust reaching their target, I am sure this year’s Blue Day will be fantastic.Steve Whiteaway
Steve adds: ‘A lot of our customers get involved and the staff always dress up and enjoy supporting the charity.
‘Screwfix does have a charity of the year, but at this branch we also like to support Blue Day.’
Supported by The News and Pompey, Blue Day is being held on Friday, May 5 – the day before the club’s final home game of the season.
And, with the Blues securing promotion to League One on Monday with a 3-1 win at Notts County, the fundraiser is sure to be a massive celebration.
Steve added: ‘With the club being promoted and the Tom Prince Cancer Trust reaching its target, I’m sure this year’s Blue Day will be fantastic.
‘There is always a real buzz around the store and May 5 will be no different.
‘Everyone in Portsmouth is aware of the event and the Prince family.’
Last year, the Tom Prince Cancer Trust reached the £1m target set when the family started the charity.
It was set up in memory of Tom, who died on the eve of his 16th birthday in 2004 from osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
The Southsea teenager was a huge Pompey fan and when the club reached the semi-final of the FA Cup in 2008 at Wembley Stadium, Tom’s parents Clinton and Adele launched Blue Day.
Thousands of people took part and since then the day has traditionally been held before Pompey’s final home game of the season.
