THE Royal Navy called off its search for a missing American sailor in the Gulf of Oman after her body was recovered from the water.

HMS Cumberland had been assisting in the search for a female sailor reported missing from missile destroyer USS Halsey on Tuesday.

Her body was recovered by a US Navy rescue swimmer the following day after it was spotted by a helicopter about 75 miles east of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

Helicopters, fighter jets and other aircraft from four ships, including HMS Cumberland, were used during the search.

US officials said they were withholding the sailor's name and all details, such as how long she had been in the navy, until her family had been notified.
