SHIPYARDS in the UK are again preparing to submit initial bids to build five cut-price frigates for the Royal Navy.

Bids to build the Type 31e – which is expected to be based in Portsmouth – are once again going to be looked at by the Ministry of Defence.

It’s the second time the process has been organised, after the first was unexpectedly cancelled.

At least two consortiums are understood to be ready to take part in the programme, The Financial Times reported.

These include Babcock International and Thales, who are expected to bid using a design by the Danish navy, and BAE Systems with Cammell Laird.
