And that journey ended with elation when they completed a 5k parkrun together on Saturday.

Victoria Wilson, 36, and Shyloe, eight, achieved their own personal milestone when they completed the run at Lee-on-the-Solent.

This weekend was Shyloe’s third 5k and she finished it in 34mins 54secs –
a few seconds shy of her personal
best, 34mins 47secs, achieved the week before.

Shyloe has to take up to six injections a day to control her Type 1 diabetes, which can cause her blood sugar levels to fluctuate and lead to severe bouts of tiredness.

Shyloe has to have her blood sugars checked with a finger prick before and during the run to make sure her glucose is at a safe level.

Victoria, a mum-of-four, of Turner Avenue, Gosport, was very proud of her daughter.

She said: ‘She always run an arm’s length away from me, but she does a sprint to the finish line and I can’t keep up with her!

‘It’s amazing.

‘I started parkrun about 18 months ago, and when she did it for the first time, it was just amazing.

‘I was so happy for her.’

Victoria said coping with the condition was something the family had to take very seriously.

‘We have to juggle it,’ she said. ‘We have to do finger prick tests before the run and during the run to check her levels.

‘She might have a biscuit to keep her going. She can get very tired during the run.’

Victoria has lost six stone since getting into her fitness 18 months ago.

Shyloe was cheered to the finish line by the crowds.

After finishing the 5k, Shyloe, who attends Rowner Junior School, said: ‘It feels good. I’m kind of used to it now.

‘It was hot today. I’m happy and excited.’

She said she would love to do more parkruns.

Victoria added: ‘I want her to keep on going with the fitness as it makes you feel so much better.’
