A SIGNIFICANT amount of oil is spilling into Southampton Water after a collision between a ferry and a tanker.

But dog-walkers and passers-by need not worry – because this is only the subject of an emergency response exercise an no such incident has occurred.

Kick-started at 10am, the simulation will involve Red Funnel, BP Hamble, Whitaker Tankers and the ABP Southampton marine team.

The aim of the drill is to test a so-called ‘multi-agency’ response to a tier two oil spill to prevent, or limit its impact.

According to a specific scenario being carried out, contingency plans will be launched after a mock-up collision between a ferry passing up Southampton Water and a tanker alongside at BP Hamble.
