SEVEN local schools have been getting to grips with building ships.
With help from apprentices and graduates at BAE Systems, nearly 60 children signed up for a 10-week programme to build a boat.
In the final challenge, each boat underwent trials to test their speed, cargo carrying capability, sea keeping and survivability in rough seas. The boats were also judged on weight, size and appearance.
Competition was fierce but Trafalgar Academy in Portsmouth won the trophy and took home the Schools Engineering Challenge title.
Engineering Challenge is a great way of encouraging young people to consider careers in engineering.’
Teamwork and problem solving was encouraged as pupils designed their boats under the supervision of their mentors.
The BAE Systems 2015 Schools Engineering Challenge is part of a wider initiative to encourage young people to get into engineering.
