South Korean military bosses given a training lesson by the Royal Navy

NAVAL top brass from South Korea were given a lesson on how the Royal Navy trains its sailors.

Rear Admiral Jeong Sang Youn, Republic of Korea’s commander, naval education and training command, was one of the VIPs given a tour of the navy’s training hubs, HMS Sultan, in Gosport, and HMS Collingwood, in Fareham.

Joined by Captain Peter Towell and Commodore Andy Cree, assistant chief of staff training, the group enjoyed briefs on the navy’s wider training programme.

They were also given tours of the Defence College of Technical Training’s Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School and the Defence School of Marine Engineering.

The trip gave the South Korean delegates a chance to understand how the navy runs its training. And while visiting Fareham’s HMS Collingwood’s Weapon Engineering Training Unit, the VIPs were given a demonstration of the navy’s 4.5ins gun, as well as a high ropes display by trainee sailors at the Royal Navy Leadership Academy.

Lieutenant Commander Richard Bicknell said: ‘This was an ideal opportunity to demonstrate how we, at the RNLA, deliver world-class training to ensure that the Royal Navy has leaders with the capability and spirit to fight and win in any situation.’
