A PART of Southsea beach is just meeting minimum EU standards for its water quality, according to the Marine Conservation Society.

The beach was given a mandatory rating in the charity’s latest Good Beach Guide along with Cowes and Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

The society gave top marks to 84 per cent of beaches in the UK.

Rachel Wyatt from the Marine Conservation Society said she hopes investigations would be carried out on the low scoring beaches to find out what is causing high levels of bacteria.
