FAMILIES descended on Southsea last night as the Christmas lights were turned on.

FAMILIES descended on Southsea last night as the Christmas lights were turned on.

 People also enjoyed the firework display as the dark night sky was lit up.

There was also entertainment on the main stage as Spinnaker Chorus sang festive tunes as the lights were switch on.

The Portsmouth City Council annual event on Palmerston Road also saw entertainment for all the family along the road with a fairground ride and a host of delicious hot food and drink bars to warm people up.

People also had the chance to get a few earlier Christmas gifts in with there a range of stalls catering for a variety of tastes. These included handmade chocolate, bags, clothes and artwork. 

Angela Brundett, of Mad Bags, travelled four hours from Derby to attend the event. She said: ‘It’s been a nice family event with everyone getting in the Christmas spirit, which is good to see. We’ve had a very successful night.’

Josh Williams, 35, of Southsea, said: ‘​​​​​It was good to see the fireworks and Christmas lights come on, even if there were a few hitches.’
