YACHTSMAN Ian Geraghty has spoken about the moment a giant wave crashed into his boat and injured several crew members.

The 52-year-old, from Southsea, is currently talking part in the Clipper Ventures round-the-world race on board Geraldton Western Australia.

The yacht was hit by a wave in a storm on Saturday about 400 miles off the coast of California which swept away its steering mounting and communications equipment.

Crew member Ian was on cooking duty in the yacht’s galley when the wave struck.

He said: ‘I heard the devastation and saw the water pouring down below.

‘The contents of the galley exploded all over the place and the boat heeled over violently.

‘I got up on deck pretty quickly and could see there were people injured and a certain amount of damage to the back of the boat but it wasn’t really apparent until you took it all in.’

Two of the crew members are now being cared for in a California hospital.

The rest of the crew arrived in San Francisco Bay yesterday evening.

Ian added: ‘It’s good to be here to have a bit of relaxation and put the boat back together.’
