Spinnaker Tower wants to raise profile of trust by backing Blue Day

The Spinnaker Tower is supporting Blue Day and the staff will be dressed in blue to raise money.

The tower has supported the day for the past few years.

Ellie Morgan, from the Spinnaker Tower, said: ‘It is very important to us to support a local charity like the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.

‘It was chosen by staff to be our charity of the year and something we want to support.

‘We have donation pots in the tower and as well as supporting Blue Day, we hold our own fundraising events.

‘It’s always important for us to participate and raise the profile of the trust as much as possible.’

As well as having staff dressed in blue, one employee will be in stocks with visitors able to throw sponges in exchange for donations.

Ellie added: ‘We want to help the trust reach that £1m.’

As previously reported in The News, the Tom Prince Cancer Trust is trying to reach its £1m target with this year’s Blue Day.

Set up in 2004 in memory of 15-year-old Tom Prince, the trust had the aim of raising £1m for research into osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer which Tom died from.

A lot of the money has been raised through Blue Day which Tom’s parents Adele and Clinton started in 2008 when Pompey reached the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium.

Tom was a huge Pompey fan and Blue Day has been held on the day before Pompey’s final home game of the season.

So far £980,000 has been raised.

Ellie said: ‘It would be great to see more people sign up for Blue Day. We supported it after hearing the story behind the trust. Adele and Clinton are lovely people and are just trying to raise the profile on the type of cancer Tom died from.

‘It is nice for Portsmouth to come together and show support. It is great for me to see when I’m travelling to work everyone dressed in blue. It’s a lovely gesture to make.’
