Residents of Windmill View, a new 275-house development, say there is not enough for the children to do on the estate.

So East Hampshire District Council and Barratt, the site developer, have joined forces to lay on a range of games, sports and activities for the young people to enjoy.

‘We are delighted to be supporting grassroots sports for the local community,’ said Tim Hill, managing director of Barratt David Wilson Southampton.

‘As a business we strive to provide great places to live and it has been fantastic to support both existing and new residents in Clanfield, and it’s great to see the young people getting involved in sport.’

Cllr Ken Moon, EHDC member for Clanfield and Finchdean, said: ‘This is a fantastic new initiative and a great way to provide local youngsters with some fun, exercise and social interaction.

‘It’s so important we engage our young people and make them feel like a valued part of the community and this new scheme will do exactly that.’

New community facilities will be built as part of the Windmill View development, including a community/sports centre, a children’s play area, tennis court, junior sports pitch, a multi-use games area and allotments.

The sports scheme was thought up after a residents’ meeting decided that children and young people needed something to do.

Barratts and EHDC shared the cost of engaging Planet Education, a team of sports providers and educational professionals that offer sport and community-based projects.

Planet Education will provide sports sessions such as football, cricket, athletics and dodgeball on Saturday mornings, due to start this Saturday.

The sessions will help children and young people get active, learn new skills, make friends and develop an understanding of teamwork.
