Staff lead the way with a 100-mile Heroes Day relay

Cheryl Ward, from Vane Recruitment, in Portsmouth, has persuaded colleagues, job candidates and clients to pop in on Friday and jump on the static bike or the running machine to reach the 100-mile goal.

And they are hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for Heroes Day which will go to Help for Heroes in memory of fallen Marine Richard Hollington.

The 23-year-old former Purbrook Park pupil died following a bomb blast in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, last year.

Heroes Day was the idea of his friend Danny Glavin and father Robin Hollington.

Cheryl said: ‘I saw an article about it in The News a few weeks ago. It was just after our operations manager had done a bike ride for Help for Heroes.

‘We have close links with the forces here, one of our girls is married to a sailor and another member of staff’s father was in the forces.

‘We wanted to do something different and someone came up with this idea.

‘It’s going to be tough but good fun. One of our clients is Wiggle and they donated the bike.

‘We’re going to have Help for Heroes bunting up and banners and balloons.

‘And if it’s nice on Friday we’re going to put the bike outside where lots of people on the main road will see us.’
