The area around The Pyramids Centre in Southsea was damaged by high winds and heavy rain. The attraction was forced to close on Sunday.

Most of it reopened yesterday, except the spa which will come back into use in the coming days. The nearby rock gardens was also closed due to flooding.

A huge pile of starfish was washed up on Southsea beach due to the stormy conditions.

Lots of families braced the stormy conditions to see what the sea had washed up.

Eleven-year-old Evelinne Budeanu, from Fratton, was taking a bracing walk with her mum Adriana, 37, and dad Eugene. She said: ‘It’s quite sad because a lot of them have died.’

Friends Mya Denley, 10, and Grace Lovell, 10, both from Southsea, were with Grace’s mum Louise Lovell also seeing what they could find along the shore and helping stranded starfish back into the sea.

Grace said: ‘Some of them have lost their tentacles, I hope they’ll grow back.’

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for the south-east yesterday.

Leader of Portsmouth City Council Donna Jones said: ‘The storm gates to the east and west of The Pyramids did very well to stop the area being swamped by water.

‘However, the area to the south and Southsea Rock Gardens were flooded. The Pyramids remains open; the gym and swimming pool is operational. The spa has been affected by flooding, and should reopen in a few days.’

Cllr Jones said the storm showed why the city has been in negotiations to secure £100m from the government to secure its flood defences.
