AN EXPERT in sexual health from the Portsmouth area has become only the fifth person in 90 years to receive a medal to reward his dedication.

Dr Raj Patel, a consultant physician and senior lecturer in genitourinary and HIV medicine at Solent NHS Trust, was awarded the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infection gold medal at a congress in Vienna, Austria, last month.

The society leads on research into sexually transmitted infections.

The award was in recognition of Dr Patel’s work in promoting international co-operation in the fight against HIV and STIs.

He said: ‘It’s real honour receiving the prestigious awards. STIs promote and facilitate the transmission of HIV and no country is immune from this deadly synergy. Controlling STI is a pivotal part of prevention.’
