A SHOP has been fined more than £20,000 for breaching fire safety standards.

The Poundland store in Commercial Road, Portsmouth, was prosecuted after Fire Protection Group members visited the premises and found rules were being flouted.

The shop was immediately evacuated to ensure the safety of staff and members of the public. Portsmouth magistrates later fined the store just over £20,000 after it admitted a charge of failing to provide adequate training for a temporary store manager and failing to keep fire exits clear.

Assistant Chief Officer Bob Ratcliffe from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘We would like this case to act as a timely reminder to business owners and landlords throughout Hampshire that the Fire Safety Order is in place. The safety of the public is our primary concern. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service will continue to utilise all the powers available to us in enforcing safety legislation.’
